Leo’s Interview with our Chatelain (Himself!) Jan. 2021
SCA name: Lord Leo MacCullan

Chatelaine: “What is your persona background?”
L: The quick answer to that is Early 17th C Scottish warrior traversing thru Europe during the 30 Years War.
Chatelaine: “How did you get involved in the SCA?”
L: I started in Trimaris (Florida) in 1996 after college. I joined a gaming group and they were into the SCA, Renaissance Faires and the like. I never knew this world existed and jumped right in!
Chatelaine: “How long have you been playing?”
L: Well, I played in Trimaris for 2 years then came back up north for massage school. During that time I went to a few events but didn’t have the time to devote to SCA life. When I moved to Vermont in 2000 I had some difficulty trying to get involved and it wasn’t until 2014 that I started playing full time in the SCA. So total… almost 10ish years.
Chatelaine: “What are your passions in the SCA?”
Leo: I am a fighter and a servant. I love fencing, heavy list, etc. I’ve been an athlete my whole life and love this sport! But even before fighting I am a servant. In my mundane life and in the SCA service is life. Without service we don’t have a society. To reflect this I am a protoge (student of service) and an armsman (student of heavy list). If you notice me wearing a yellow (service) or blue (heavy) belt this shows my devotion to learning these paths in the SCA.
Chatelaine: “Are you part of a household?”
L: Yes, a couple actually… Locally we have a small household we affectionately call “The House of DERP”. We are a kind of a super dorky “family by choice” and we relish in that fact. Also I am a part of a larger House called “Duchy Drakenklaue” or VDK. It is a conglomeration of several households that originated under Duke Lucan. My sub house of VDK is known as Clan MacWard.
Chatelaine: “What keeps you involved?”
L: I am here to help, and to help things be better.. The society is always evolving and want to help that evolution be more open, welcoming and accessible for everyone.
Chatelaine: “Do you have any goals in the SCA? What are they?”
L: Yeah, my big goal is to be recognized as a Master of Defense (Peer of Fencing). There are 2 aspects to that, the skill necessary, and being noted of having Peer-Like-Qualities (PLQ’s). So learning both physical and courtly skills.
Chatelaine: “What kinds of things would you like to happen in the shire?”
L: I am hoping to help create more of a community for the shire. I’d love to help us become a cohesive group that works well together for the benefit of all our members. To become known for being especially welcoming, and helpful to those who want to experience what the SCA is.
Chatelaine: “Are there any things you would like people to know about you? Mundanely or otherwise.”
L: I am here as a contact and resource for everyone, so I want people to know that they can reach out to me anytime!
